Leader of campaign to cancel Third World debt

Without Martin Dent the worldwide movement to cancel the debts of the world’s poorest countries might never have happened. With William Peters (obituary, April 30, 2014) he was the co-founder of Jubilee 2000 and the pair worked tirelessly to present the moral and financial arguments for their campaign. Such was the degree of popular support that eventually the heads of governments of the G8 countries promised to act and cancelled billions of pounds of debts.
